Drops of rain on her face concealed the heavy tears that fell from her eyes, she was so drenched and the cold breeze that slammed her could not compel her to seek shelter at the corridor behind. The flashy lighting gave her a scare to a point of coiling on the Woody bench shivering in cold. "Hey, it's not advisable to sit under the rain you could fall sick," he said holding an umbrella over her. She lifted her face but drops of water slopped into her eyes and she blinked. "Who are you and what do you care," she said grumpily. "I am Robert but you can call me Buddy, Miss, the rains won't wash away your sorrow instead it will give you a bunch of problems," she kept her face down not even giving a bother at this stranger beside her. He spread a piece of paper on the wet bench and sat beside her. "You see during my brother's wedding he asked 'Rob, is it true that people change after marriage?" and do you know what my answer was." "What," she asked grouchily "I said, maybe I can marry your girlfriend on your behalf and see if I will change." "You are so cony," she grimly smiled. "Amazing, I got your attention, so may I know your beautiful name?" "I'm Mia." "Mia like Miami," "Whatever," "Mia it's nice meeting you," he stretched his hand but she stared at him questionably. "You can go ahead and touch my hand because I haven't visited the restroom for the last minutes that I have been here." She felt an unknown spark when he held her hand, a coziness that made her forget all her misery, it was as if she had known him all her life on realization she snappily let go of his hand. "So what is Mia doing on the street all by herself this late at night." "Trying to clear my mind." "It's love, am I right?" "And what gave you the notion." "Because only heartbreak can drive you to this extent, but I always advice my sister to shout it out or do some boxing it does help so Mia you wanna give it a shot?" "No way, not in the middle of the street," "Look around there are only a few people, do it you will thank me later."
Mia had everything, a good family and a luxurious life, but when it came to love, luck was never on her side. She leaned against the bench fixing her gaze on the now clear sky as the twinkling stars gave her a wink. The shriek had made her throat hoarse but he was right, it was magical and she felt relieved. It was cranky how cozy she felt around this stranger but it was relishing so she didn't give a rap. "Mia, you are quivering, go on take my jacket," he said doffing it. "It's okay am fine." "I won't take no for an answer Mia, so should I put it on you?" "No thanks, I can do it on my own, hey do you think we were besties in the past life?" "Do you believe in reincarnation?" "I guess." "But why did you even ask that?" "It's nothing, oh, I should be going home now." "Where do you live?" "Across the road on your left." "Golden estate?" "Yeah." " So can I walk you home?" "No Robert it's enough that you kept me company." "I don't think it's right for me to allow a lady to walk home alone all by herself this late at night but I think you have no choice because I'm also from there." "What! but I have never seen you around." "Yeah, I just arrived two days ago." "Arrived, but from where?" she asked as they strolled "My family and I reside in Miami, so anytime we are in Kenya golden is our domicile, but it has been ages since the last time I was here. "Welcome back home." "Thank you but if somebody told me about the beauties around, I would have been here a long time ago," "You wish."
He had spent all his childhood in Miami so anytime he flew back to Kenya he had no one to call a friend.
"So what do you do in Miami?" she asked out of the blue.
"Apart from studying I'm into music."
"And what type of music do you indulge in?"
"Reggae and love songs."
"Oh, that nice."
"What about you Mia, what type of music do you like listening to?"
"My favorite type of music is country music but also any love song can do,"
"And you favorite artist."
"Dolly Parton."
"Oh, I love her song mostly the one called ' But you know I love you' you know it"
"Definitely, Robert this is my destination."
"So this is where you live, my house rather my folks' house is at the end corner, so can I see you again coz it was fun talking to you."
"Why not, I also had fun."
"So are you not going to ring the bell?"
"My parents know that I am sleeping and it should remain that way."
"Okay," he slightly nodded.
"Come with me." she pulled his hand
"Don't tell me you are going over the wall."
"Exactly, this is the shortest route to my room, come on help me out."
"You are something else, were you a tomboy in your past life," she tilted to look down but suddenly fell off the wall into his arms and they both tumbled on the wet ground.
Her braided hair rested on his beard face. He slowly moved his fingers through it and lifted it off her fair skin and their eyes came in to contact. "You are so beautiful Mia," he fondly said. "Oh, sorry," she apologized moving away from him. "It's okay Mia." "Are you hurt?" "No, but my wears are wet." "Sorry again, this time I promise I won't fall." "I won't mind," he smiled "But be careful this time I may not be here to grab you," he cautioned as she slid up the wall. "Hey thank you I had fun and don't worry about your Jacket I will return it after washing," she said hanging from the other side of the wall. "I also enjoyed every bit of it, have a goodnight Mia, I'll see you around, won't I?" "Sure, goodnight Buddy." From the window, she waved at him and the smile on his face could not be wiped off. He didn't understand why she made him feel lively but one thing was definite, he craved to see her again.
